Donald Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee for this year’s election, held a press conference on Thursday from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida… and got terrible reviews.

“Trump will be able to use this press conference as evidence he’s mentally incompetent to stand trial,” quipped anti-Trump conservative organization The Lincoln Project on X, formerly Twitter.

“Trump is currently bragging about his crowd size on January 6. This dude’s brain is cooked,” added journalist Brian Tyler Cohen. When still the president, Trump held an outdoor rally in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021 — the same day that pro-Trump demonstrators attacked the U.S. Capitol complex, disrupting the scheduled certification by Congress of the presidential election results from 2020. Trump’s rally helped feed into the Capitol assault, with some attendees apparently moving from the Trump event to the Capitol complex.

Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), which is the main national party organization for Republicans, also commented.

“This man is spewing utter BS. He is talking out of his behind. Given that, and the fact that Trump is the oldest person to run for the presidency and is clearly showing the mental effects of his age, will the press ask this man the same penetrating questions regarding his mental acuity and whether he’s “okay” or “fit” to serve and perhaps should step down from the top of the ticket. Don’t worry, I’ll wait,” he posted on Thursday.

Steele is referring to the media scrutiny of President Joe Biden’s advanced age that semi-recently culminated in Biden stepping aside from the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place. Harris quickly assembled the kind of support from within the Democratic Party necessary to move forward, and while Trump lingers at Mar-a-Lago, she is in the middle of a seven-state campaign sweep. On Tuesday, she made public her choice for running mate: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
