In new polling data from Redfield & Wilton Strategies, Vice President Kamala Harris — who is this year’s Democratic pick for president — leads former President Donald Trump, the current Republican pick, by one percentage point in the state of Arizona.
While that margin is not large enough to make a sweeping generalization about the state of the race, it’s a change from prior polling from this same source that found Trump leading in the same state by three percentage points.
The prior polling was conducted right after President Joe Biden withdrew from this year’s election and endorsed Harris to take his place, and in the time since the start of that earlier polling and now, Harris has rapidly consolidated support across the Democratic Party at the grassroots level and among elected officials. There was no serious public challenge among Democrats to Harris once Biden stepped aside, though he is staying on as president.
“In the same time frame, Nevada has gone from Trump having a lead of two points to being tied, and Arizona has flipped from being Trump +3 to Harris +1. Furthermore, Harris’ lead in Minnesota has expanded from three points to five,” the pollsters said, discussing some of the changes seen in their latest 2024 election polling of a selection of states.
Harris held a campaign rally in Arizona just last week, drawing a large crowd. “More than 15,000 people at Harris Walz rally in battle ground state of Arizona. In 25 years, I’ve never seen a Dem crowd this size,” wrote Arizonan journalist Brahm Resnik on social media. The event was part of a campaign swing through seven states accompanying the roll-out last week of Harris’ choice for running mate in this year’s general election, Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, who started joining Harris on the campaign trail the very night that him joining the ticket became public.
