A political action committee (PAC) associated with what CBS News called the “oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization” in the U.S. is getting behind Democrats Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. The endorsement, from the LULAC Adelante PAC, is apparently the first such endorsement in the history of LULAC, an abbreviation for the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“Thrilled to see @LULAC endorsement of @KamalaHarris. This is the FIRST ever presidential endorsement by the organization since its founding 95 years ago. So HISTORIC!” said top Texas county official Lina Hidalgo on social media.

An announcement of the endorsement pointed to both the recent political targeting of Latino immigrants and policy work that the organization said Harris had undertaken towards improving everyday life for Latinos in the United States.

“The politics of hate mongering and scapegoating Latinos and immigrants must be stopped!” said the PAC’s chairman Domingo Garcia. “The Biden-Harris administration’s actions over these last few years resulted in direct and important support for millions of Latinos, including small business owners, low-income families, and Dreamers.”

The press release also outlined ambitions towards voter outreach in key electoral battleground states all around the United States, including Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Harris has recently campaigned in all of these states.

Harris quickly started amassing extensive support as she’s taken on her new role as Democrats’ presidential pick for this year’s election. She also recently scored endorsements from United Auto Workers (UAW), the union UNITE HERE, and the Culinary Union, the last of which is a Nevada-focused organization that’s associated with the larger UNITE HERE. She is also getting support from Republicans like the mayor of Mesa, Arizona, which has a population of just over half a million. The Harris campaign rolled out a whole “Republicans for Harris” initiative, touting endorsement after endorsement.
