The Culinary Union — a workers’ organization in Nevada that is affiliated with the union UNITE HERE — is endorsing the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in this year’s presidential election.

Harris, currently the nation’s vice president, became Democrats’ standard-bearer for this year’s presidential race after the withdrawal from the election of President Joe Biden amid scrutiny of his advanced age. Biden endorsed Harris to take his place, and the latter revealed last week that she was picking Walz — Minnesota’s governor — as her running mate for this year’s election.

“The Culinary Union is proud to endorse Kamala Harris for President and Tim Walz for Vice-President of the United States of America. Kamala has consistently championed our union and hospitality workers. She stood by us as we negotiated and won the best union contract ever, and we trust her to continue the progress of the Biden/Harris administration by delivering real results that will prioritize and protect working families,” said the union’s Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge.

“As the largest organization of working women in Nevada, the chance to elect the first Black and South Asian woman president of the USA is both energizing and historic and we are ready to make history together. The path to victory runs through Nevada, and the Culinary Union will deliver Nevada for President Kamala Harris and Vice-President Tim Walz,” he added.

UNITE HERE also endorsed Harris, as did United Auto Workers (UAW) ahead of a campaign stop by Harris in Michigan, a center of U.S. automaking.

The last time that a Republican won Nevada in a general election for president was in 2004, but in the time since, the state has been close — sometimes going Republican on the state level outside of a presidential race. This time around, there has not been a glut of polling in the state, particularly following Harris’ ascent to the front of Democrats’ ticket for the year. Recent data from a Republican-leaning pollster found a Trump lead, while Redfield & Wilton Strategies said that the state was tied.
