In a discussion on Wednesday on CNN with the news network’s Kaitlan Collins, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) asserted that former President Donald Trump — now yet again the year’s presidential nominee from the Republican Party — would take the United States backwards if he got his way.
“I mean, [Trump] is focused on name-calling, saying things that people don’t understand,” Kelly said.
“His speech is now sometimes slurred, and he’s very hard to follow. And the amount of excitement that’s behind the Harris-Walz campaign is just off the charts. Gabby and I were in Glendale, just on Friday, and got to experience that. And there’s a tremendous amount of energy. But I listened very closely to what she had to say. And Kamala Harris is about taking this country forward. I think people are starting to see that Donald Trump is a relic of the past that just wants to drag us backwards.”
Harris, currently the nation’s vice president, recently rose to the front of the Democratic ticket for this year’s presidential election following the withdrawal from that race of President Joe Biden, who endorsed her. Contrary to claims and insinuations from Trump, Biden is still president in the meantime, completing his four years in office. Kelly was discussed as a possibility to be Harris’ running mate, but she ultimately went with Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz.
And indeed, Harris recently campaigned in Arizona, which went from a Trump victory in 2016 to a win for Biden in 2020. The crowd chanted “Lock him up!” — referencing Trump — multiple times in the course of her and Walz appearing before them.
“The courts will deal with that,” Harris said to the chants during her speech. “We’re going to win in November. We’re going to win in November. We’ll handle that too.”
The enthusiasm jump is now reflected in recent polling from Monmouth University, which found “enthusiasm” about this year’s election among Democrats surging past Republicans’ enthusiasm.
