The United Auto Workers (UAW) — a large workers’ union — is rolling out ambitious support on the campaign trail for the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, following the union’s recent endorsement of the Democratic duo.
“The UAW is launching its most ambitious political program in decades for an all-out effort to elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States. The Union’s program will include mobilizing UAW members online, at worksites, and in the field with a door-to-door program to reach members, retirees, and their families around a pro-worker, anti-Corporate Greed agenda,” said a new press release.
The union, which has one million active and retired members, is a major force in Michigan, which in turn is a closely watched electoral battleground state that was won by Donald Trump in 2016 but Joe Biden in 2020.
Other recently announced organizational support for Harris and Walz includes endorsements from the union UNITE HERE, the Culinary Union, and a political arm of LULAC, which focuses on advancing civil rights for Latino communities in the United States. The LULAC endorsement was the first such endorsement in the organization’s history. The Culinary Union, meanwhile, is big in Nevada, which while won by Democrats in recent presidential elections has nonetheless been close in some final results.
Harris herself has recently campaigned in these states, embarking on what was originally planned to be a campaign swing through seven states in conjunction with rolling out Walz’s new role. Trump has been largely off the campaign trail, though he’s still kept himself visible with a series of interviews, and he does have a rally appearance scheduled for Pennsylvania that’s happening this upcoming weekend. Throughout this, Trump’s running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) has been keeping up a stream of campaign stops for Republicans’ ticket.
