In new national polling of the 2024 race for president from Kaplan Strategies, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is leading Republican pick Donald Trump by six percentage points among likely voters — which, if replicated in the actual election, would be larger than the national margin by which successful Democratic contender Joe Biden won the popular vote in 2020.
With only the two major party contenders specifically named for survey participants, Harris was at 50 percent, while Trump was at 44 percent. Among registered voters, Harris’ lead sunk slightly to five percentage points.
Adding respondents initially identifying themselves as uncertain who, when asked, said they were leaning towards one of the candidates, Harris’ lead over her infamous Republican challenger grew to seven percent, with 52 percent of the support among likely voters to Trump’s 45 percent.
There was also recent national polling done by Fairleigh Dickinson University that found a similarly large lead for Harris against Trump, but in that survey, some respondents were also asked questions that brought up the racial identity of candidates, with pollsters raising sex and gender with another portion of the survey’s participants. In the pooled results including all of the groups, Harris was up by seven percent.
As previously reported on this website, all of the poll participants were asked from a list of five issues which were “important” to their decision-making. For a third, “The Race or Ethnicity of the Candidate” was one of the issues, while for another third, “Whether the Candidate is a Man or a Woman” was specified. Harris and Trump were essentially tied in the remaining third, for whom neither issue was raised, while Harris was ahead by double digits in both of the other survey groups.
