In an interview aired on Thursday on CNN, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris was asked by the news network’s Dana Bash about recent antagonism from Republican pick Donald Trump involving Harris’ racial identity.

In an onstage interview at an event of the National Association of Black Journalists — of all places, Trump contended that Harris “happened to turn Black,” arguing she was being deceptive and/or conniving in identifying herself as such… although her father was born in Jamaica. Harris’ mother hailed from India. Trump’s criticisms — apparently going with the idea that Harris was not “Black enough,” or something — were widely decried as ridiculous and totally out of line.

“What I want to ask you about is what he said last month,” Bash said. “He suggested that you ‘happened to turn Black’ recently for political purposes, questioning a core part of your identity.”

Harris wasn’t interested in lingering on the subject of Trump’s outbursts. The Democrat called it the “same old tired playbook,” adding: “Next question please.” “That’s it?” Bash asked. “That’s it,” Harris replied.

Others in Harris’ political corner already characterized some of Trump’s recent outbursts, including the comments referenced here, as threatening to distract from more important issues ahead of the rapidly approaching November election.

“Telling an easily disproven lie that only calls attention to her huge crowds… has to be for a reason. Likeliest reason: get us talking about anything but his wildly unpopular agenda of cutting taxes for the rich and dismantling access to abortion nationwide,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg after Trump recently claimed — falsely — that the Harris team was using generative artificial intelligence software, aka AI, to fake images of crowds at the VP’s campaign events. There was zero real-world proof of anything like that from the Democrat’s presidential campaign team. But there Trump was anyway!
