Jimmy McCain, the youngest son of the late John McCain — known as a veteran, Senator, and presidential nominee, is planning to vote in this year’s presidential election for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, he says.
The younger McCain also expressed outrage over a recent incident at Arlington National Cemetery, where Republican nominee Donald Trump posed for the camera. The trip subsequently showed up in Trump campaign materials distributed online.
And though Trump himself disputes this, reports even have said that there was an altercation on the grounds, with a member of the cemetery’s staff trying to stop any filming in an area with recent burials. In the Trump campaign video that eventually went up on the social media platform TikTok, a series of grave markers are visible, including one for “an Army Special Forces soldier who died by suicide, and whose family said they did not give the campaign permission to film it,” according to CNN.
“Many of these men and women, who served their country, chose to do something greater than themselves,” Jimmy told CNN. “They woke up one morning, they signed on the dotted line, they put their right hand up, and they chose to serve their country. And that’s an experience that Donald Trump has not had. And I think that might be something that he thinks about a lot.” Jimmy called what took place at the cemetery a “violation.”
The younger McCain — brother to conservative commentator Meghan McCain and son of Cindy McCain, who has a history of advocacy work — is himself a longtime U.S. military service member. He is currently an intelligence officer. Members of the McCain family are among the many fallen Americans at Arlington.
Condemnation for Trump over the Arlington debacle was extensive.
“He’s certainly unfit to be the commander-in-chief,” said Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.), who’s herself a veteran. “You just keep seeing new lows with Donald Trump, and it’s difficult to come on again and again and again to shows like this to talk about how horrible his conduct is with respect to our military and our veterans, and really get a sense that then he just continues to try to cloak himself in the flag, to cloak himself and surround himself with veterans when he disparages them, when he disparages this country again and again and again.”
