Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City-turned-loyal Trump follower, is remaining… outspoken around election issues. And he’s still facing correction.
“URGENT NOTICE: Michigan’s corrupt Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is already engaging in election interference by keeping RFK Jr.’s name on the ballot,” he posted recently on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
The idea’s apparently that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s name being left on the ballot could unduly split votes on the conservative side following Kennedy’s suspension of his presidential campaign and endorsement of Donald Trump in the 2024 election. (Kennedy’s decision drew condemnation from his politically involved, famously Democratic family.)
But Robert is the one who pursued his independent campaign to that extent before reversing.
“Hi @RudyGiuliani,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, replied to Giuliani. “I know you’re no longer a licensed attorney because you made several “demonstrably false and misleading statements” about the 2020 election, so allow me to clarify Michigan law for you. MCL 168.686a(4): Candidates who are nominated and accept a minor party’s nomination “shall not be permitted to withdraw.””
Giuliani was disbarred earlier this year in New York amid the fallout of his participation in court challenges after the 2020 presidential election, when Democratic candidate Joe Biden was the victor and after which no real-world proof has ever substantiated the far-right’s claims of systematic fraud denying Trump a win. Michigan was among the states that were won by Trump in 2016 but Biden four years later, contributing to the latter’s electoral college majority.
Michigan was among the states won by Biden where a slate of sham, pro-Trump electoral votes was assembled. Prosecutors in the state already brought related criminal charges.
Michigan remains closely watched in this election cycle. Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris held a campaign rally there on Monday.
