At a campaign trail event in Detroit, Michigan, on Monday — which was Labor Day, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris was joined by the general president of (and hundreds of members from) the Laborers’ International Union of North America, aka LIUNA.
“Both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris walked the picket line, they didn’t hire fake scabs to show up at a non-union jobsite and pretend to be union members. They showed up with us,” said LIUNA General President Brent Booker, according to a press release from the organization. “We’re going to stand shoulder to shoulder and work every single day in the great state of Michigan. […] We’re not going back. We’re going forward with Kamala Harris.”
Also at the same rally was Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, a teachers union. That organization — also standing with Harris — kicked off a nationwide bus tour in conjunction with Weingarten’s appearance, intending to continue the trek until Election Day this November. They’re planning on crisscrossing the country in these remaining weeks, with stops after Detroit starting with Pittsburgh and Las Vegas, per the group’s initial scheduling.
Michigan went from a Trump win in the 2016 race for president to a victory for Joe Biden in the election four years later that put the Democratic contender in the White House, and it remains closely watched.
Also at the Detroit event on Monday was the state’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who won another term in the 2022 midterm elections by a massive margin no matter past, personal targeting from Trump.
“This guy just doesn’t get you or your life at all,” Whitmer said, referencing Trump. “I don’t think he could tell us what the difference is between a flat head and a Phillips head screwdriver, you know what I’m saying? You think he’s ever swung a hammer or used a power tool in his life? Oh hell no. You think he’s ever scanned a coupon at the store to save money as he’s checking out? You think he ever sat down with a number of family bills knowing he could only afford to pay some of ’em? He’s never struggled.”
