According to a new poll of the 2024 race for president, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is in the lead — slightly — in North Carolina, which was actually won by her current challenger Donald Trump the last two times that he showed up in a general election, in 2020 and 2016.
The new polling, from North Carolina news outlet WRAL and SurveyUSA, found Harris at 49 percent to Trump’s 46 percent among likely voters. The polling was completed at the end of last week.
Both of the major party candidates have already campaigned — in person — in North Carolina as the general election in November gets ever closer. Harris delivered a closely watched speech on her economic policy agenda in the state, while in North Carolina this year, there is a Trump-backed Republican candidate running for governor, Mark Robinson. Polling is repeatedly showing a lead for Democratic challenger Josh Stein, who is currently the state attorney general there. Plus, the seat is currently held by a Democratic incumbent.
Meanwhile, Trump and Harris are set to meet on Tuesday for their first televised debate of the general election season, taking place a little over a month after Harris’ sudden ascent in late July to the top of this year’s Democratic presidential ticket. She took over for incumbent President Joe Biden after he withdrew from the 2024 race for the White House amid questions about his age and endorsed Harris, and she quickly locked down support from public figures in the party and grassroots backers — amassing absolutely massive fundraising totals that soared past half a billion around the time of last month’s Democratic convention in Chicago.
