In new polling from Yahoo News and YouGov that was conducted after their televised general election debate hosted last week by ABC News, Democratic presidential nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris is leading Republican pick Donald Trump by five percentage points at the national level.

Among registered voters, Harris nabbed 50 percent of the support, with Trump at 45 percent. Only three percent said that they were unsure.

In general, Harris has tended to fare better in polling than President Joe Biden, who stepped back from this year’s race for president in July and endorsed Harris to replace him. She quickly assembled support from Democratic Party politicians and grassroots party members and sailed to the party’s nomination, made formal — again — with the Democratic National Convention held late last month in Chicago.

Harris is getting support from some prominent Republican voices, including a group of 17 individuals who formerly worked as staff members for the late Ronald Reagan.

“President Ronald Reagan famously spoke about a “Time for Choosing”. While he is not here to experience the current moment, we who worked for him in the White House, in the Administration, in campaigns and on his personal staff, know he would join us in supporting the Harris-Walz ticket,” they said. “The time for choosing we face today is a choice between integrity and demagoguery, and the choice must be Harris-Walz.”

Harris is also backed by a coalition of hundreds of individuals who’ve worked for four different Republican presidents and presidential nominees, plus a group of former White House lawyers in Republican presidential administrations. And that is on top of organizational support from prominent unions and more across the country.
