Can you believe it? There is some good news, finally. After this past unprecedented year of living in our coronavirus caves, people have begun to emerge, blinking their eyes in the bright warm sunshine of human interaction.  There is still a lot that is not working, though, such as the Republican lawmakers in D.C. and in nearly every state working their little buns off to go autocratic aka Fascist aka a dictatorship. They would prefer to take our whole Democracy down in flames rather than lose their jobs. But New Mexico just handed these United States a great big eve of change present.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was not very happy when President Joe Biden began plucking her Democrats for cabinet and other important positions. He chose Representative Deb Haaland (D-NM) to become the first Native American to serve on any cabinet. And who better to serve as the Interior Secretary?

There is only one other Native American in the House of Representatives, Sharice Davids (D-KS). Republicans in the Topeka capitol just announced they will redraw their district lines and eliminate her position, but not if Davids has anything to say about it. The Kansas district contains one of the state’s major population centers.

Tuesday, New Mexico had a race to replace Haaland.  It was going to be an indicator of how well the Democrats would do in the 2022 midterms. President Biden won by 23 points, and Haaland won by 16 points. That meant candidate Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) had to win and win bigger than the former representative.

Well, not only did Stansbury win, The Associated Press called the race at 10:04 p.m. ET., Stansbury was winning by a stunning almost 60.3 percent of the votes, according to The Washington Post with 70 percent of the vote counted. She defeated New Mexico state Senator Mark Moores (R-NM) in the special election for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, which houses another population center, Albuquerque. The final tally of her win was 24+ percent.

Stansbury ran primarily on:

  • Environmental issues
  • Caretaker of her state’s natural resources
