Donald Trump invited survivors of mass gun killings and their families to the White House and read “I hear you” from his cheat sheet. He made great promises. Then, he had dinner with the NRA’s top executives.
In spite of these people telling the president they did not want teachers packing heat, Trump came out strong for educators tucking concealed AK-15s in their bras and tighty-whities. The commander-in-chief began his morning tweets by patting himself on the back about “strengthening of background checks” and:
‘Very strong improvement and strengthening of background checks will be fully backed by White House. Legislation moving forward. Bump Stocks will soon be out. Highly trained expert teachers will be allowed to conceal carry, subject to State Law. Armed guards OK, deterrent!…….’
People must be 21 to purchase a handgun but only 18 for an AR-15. This rifle is too powerful for hunting, because it chews up the game into shreds. Even though Trump told the survivors he would move the age limit to purchase weapons of war to 21, now he is “watching” “before acting.”
‘….On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting. States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly).’
The problem with having teachers carrying concealed weapons is that even trained professionals can have trouble when an attack is underway. First of all, a handgun that could be concealed would be virtually useless against the AR-15 that took 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Then, there would be mass hysteria with children running every which way to escape the gunfire. The likelihood that a teacher could shoot an innocent child would be high.
Of course, people who deal with gun attacks train every day for just such a ocurrence. Teachers do not have that kind of time.
Finally, the skill of teaching calls for receptiveness and openness. The skill of taking out a crazed killer demands exactly the opposite – guardedness and tight focus.
The Twitter world went wild after Trump tweeted this dumb idea. Check out some of our favorites below:
