Former President Donald Trump was heading to Capitol Hill this week to visit with House Republicans, not long after his criminal conviction in a felony case in New York City where he was accused of the falsification of business records. As part of the case, prosecutors alleged a covert ambition to impact the 2016 presidential election hinging on original hush money to which those records traced.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) deemed Trump the “instigator of an insurrection” on the occasion of his return to Washington, D.C.

“Today, the instigator of an insurrection is returning to the scene of the crime,” Pelosi said on Thursday, referring to the attack on the Capitol in early 2021 by Trump supporters, which the ex-president himself has been widely accused of inciting. She added: “With his pledges to be a dictator on day one and seek revenge against his political opponents, Donald Trump comes to Capitol Hill today with the same mission of dismantling our democracy. But make no mistake — Trump has already cemented his legacy of shame in our hallowed halls.”

Around the time of Trump’s trip, a quickly controversy-spurring report from POLITICO said that he’d been in touch shortly after his New York City conviction with Speaker of the House Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), pushing for some kind of action to reverse the outcome. Congress does not have the power to reverse individual convictions, though members do have wide-ranging investigatory abilities that Republicans in this Congress have already used against authorities who’ve targeted Trump on the federal and state levels. That list ranges from Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis to Special Counsel Jack Smith and beyond.
