In a new appearance on CNN, outspoken Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) discussed the stream of rhetoric from Donald Trump and his political camp that concerned observers continue to decry as threatening violence.

A recent fundraising email from the Trump camp included the message: “Haul out the guillotine!”

“Well, as someone who’s had a lot of those death threats aimed at me and my colleagues, we’re not going to be intimidated, but we do prefer voting over violence,” Swalwell said to CNN’s Jim Acosta. “And that type of rhetoric shows the losing streak that Donald Trump is on. His best day was in November 2016, and he has been a serial loser since. He lost the House in 2018. He lost the White House and the Senate. We kept the House in 2020. In 2022, that big red wave that was supposed to come did not come.”

“He doesn’t have the votes,” he added. “So, he’s choosing violence. And that’s what this upcoming election is very much going to be about. Who do we prefer — a person of character or a person who has [a] felony conviction but lacks any moral conviction?”

Trump trekked back to Washington, D.C., just this week to gather with elected Republicans in the House and Senate. He even met with occasional political opponent Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican Senator, who already endorsed Trump ahead of this year’s election and the expected electoral rematch between Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden. Neither Trump’s recent criminal conviction nor his three additional criminal cases nor his concern-spurring rhetoric have significantly shaken the support that Trump still gets from Republicans at both the grassroots and elected levels.

In fact, at least some prominent Republicans tried to help him out with targeted rhetoric. Multiple elected Republicans who showed up to Trump’s recent criminal trial — and spoke against figures other than Trump involved in the process — specifically cited an interest in getting around a gag order that was imposed on Trump.
