Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) was among the many Americans paying attention to the progression of a debate held on Thursday night in Georgia between former President Donald Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden as the two head towards an expected electoral rematch later this year.

Though it was one topic in a much larger list, the topic of the Capitol riot in 2021 came up during the evening’s widely televised discussion.

“Trump’s legacy was the normalization of political violence. He is unfit to serve,” said a post from Crow on his official account on X (formerly Twitter) as the debate drew to a close. Crow, who like many other elected officials was at the Capitol when the 2021 riot took place, also blamed Trump for what happened. “Trump incited an insurrection on January 6, full stop,” said Crow.

Asked about the Capitol riot during the debate, Trump started by deflecting.

“Well, I don’t think too many believe that,” he said after a question about hypothetical voters who believe Trump violated his oath around that day’s events. “And let me tell you about January 6. On January 6, we had a great border, nobody coming through, very few. On January 6, we were energy independent. On January 6, we had the lowest taxes ever. We had the lowest regulations ever. On January 6th, we were respected all over the world. All over the world, we were respected. And then he comes in and we’re now laughed at. We’re like a bunch of stupid people that – what happened to the United States’s reputation under this man’s leadership is horrible.”

Notably, Trump himself was actually “laughed at” in an infamous appearance at the United Nations during his time as president.

At present, Trump’s own somewhat January 6-related criminal case is awaiting a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on his claims of wide-ranging legal protections by mere virtue of once serving as president that supposedly should end the case entirely.
