In remarks at a campaign event in North Carolina not long after this week’s debate with former President Donald Trump, incumbent President Joe Biden — who is heading towards an expected electoral rematch with the ex-White House occupant later this year — deemed the ex-president a “threat” to roaring support from attendees.

“Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation,” said the current president. “He is a threat to our freedom. He is a threat to our democracy. He’s literally a threat for everything America stands for. Look, he doesn’t understand what I think all of you do.  America is the finest, the most unique nation in the world.” Listeners shouted “Yes!” as Biden spoke.

Biden faced criticism for how he came across at the debate, which was held in Georgia, but — despite sudden hullabaloo — he has made no indication of ambitions to step back from the race, no matter his age.

Biden has openly acknowledged his age, including in this speech. “Folks, I don’t walk as easy as I used to,” Biden said. “I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know what I do know: I know how to tell the truth.”

Neither Trump nor Biden are technically their respective parties’ formal presidential nominees yet, but it was already clear for a while that they’d get there. None of the challengers to either the ex-president or incumbent in the primaries got very far. On the Republican side, many of Trump’s primary challengers ended up just supporting him, while on the Democratic side, contender Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is now running as an independent. Precedent from recent elections suggests that no candidate outside the major parties will get particularly large shares of the vote, though Kennedy does have his last name in tow.
