In new polling from YouGov and CBS News, a majority of registered voters said they did not think that former President Donald Trump should currently be running for president, and among those sharing that perspective, almost all cited his recent felony criminal conviction in New York City as a reason.

A full 54 percent of respondents said Trump should not be running for president, though a larger share said as much of incumbent President Joe Biden when respondents were pooled at the top level (national registered voters). In the subgroup opposed to Trump running for the White House (again), 91 percent cited his felony conviction as a reason. Eighty-nine percent cited “decisions he might make in office.”

A lot of the discussion around Biden continuing his run for president — or not — centers on his age, with the president’s “performance” at a recent debate with Trump criticized as poor, though some thought the incumbent fared significantly better at an event the next day. Neither Trump nor Biden have shared any indications of an ambition to actually step back from the unfolding presidential race, amid which they’re both on track to soon formally become their respective political parties’ formal nominees for president this year.

After the debate, providing somewhat of a counterpoint to talk about Biden’s age, The Editorial Board at The Philadelphia Inquirer said that Trump was instead the one who ought to step back from the race, citing his record and behavior.

“His performance demonstrated once again that he is a danger to democracy and unfit for office. In fact, the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump,” said the Inquirer board. “To build himself up, Trump constantly tears the country down. There is no shining city on the hill. It’s just mourning in America.… Trump is an unserious carnival barker running for the most serious job in the world. During his last term, Trump served himself and not the American people.”
