Swing State Editorial Board Declares Donald Trump To Be Plainly ‘Unfit For Office’

Following the highly discussed debate recently held in Georgia between former President Donald Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden, The Editorial Board at The Philadelphia Inquirer — a leading newspaper in a closely watched swing state — said Trump needs to withdraw.

They were providing somewhat of a counterpoint to the vociferous discussion after the debate about whether Biden should stay in the race considering his advanced age and arguments that his “performance” was poor, though he was considered to sound much better shortly after the debate at a campaign event in North Carolina. But the Biden discussion got, quite simply, a lot of attention as Trump still careens to the Republican nomination for president this year no matter his wide range of courtroom problems, including a post-criminal trial sentencing this month.

“But lost in the hand wringing was Donald Trump’s usual bombastic litany of lies, hyperbole, bigotry, ignorance, and fear mongering,” said the Inquirer journalists, referring to the post-debate discussions. “His performance demonstrated once again that he is a danger to democracy and unfit for office. In fact, the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump. […] To build himself up, Trump constantly tears the country down. There is no shining city on the hill. It’s just mourning in America. […] Trump is an unserious carnival barker running for the most serious job in the world. During his last term, Trump served himself and not the American people.”

To be sure, there’s no indication that either Trump or Biden will, in fact, be stepping back from the race ahead of the presidential election mere months down the road.

Polling suggests the election could be close like last time around, with some variance — including Trump leads — in surveys at the national level, though presidents are decided on a state-by-state basis via the electoral college.

Update: Trump’s sentencing in New York was postponed to September.
