Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) says that she is planning to file articles of impeachment after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision this week to grant presidents and former presidents a layer of legal immunity for some actions taken in office. The immunity was sought by former President Donald Trump as he faces a criminal case accusing him of conspiring against the 2020 presidential election results.

“The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control. Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return,” said the New York Congresswoman in a post to her personal account on X, formerly known as Twitter.

She didn’t appear to include specific names in her initial remarks on this issue, but presumably, targets would include Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, who are already frequent targets of Democrats’ ethics questions.

And some of the concern around the duo links right back to issues hanging in the balance around this very criminal case against Trump. Thomas’ wife Ginni Thomas was an avowed supporter of some targeting of Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 race, while with Alito, media reports have said that multiple flags also seen during the 2021 Capitol riot were seen outside Alito residences, though the judge credited his wife with one of the flags (an upside down American flag).

Justice Thomas also went under scrutiny for reports of pricey accommodations from which he benefited that initially went largely unreported in terms of financial disclosures usually made by such judges, raising the specter for some of potentially massive conflicts of interest on the part of a leading judge whose decisions carry import all across the United States. Thomas has been accused (in an unofficial capacity) of breaking the law with his apparently seriously lapsing disclosures.
