The president continues to seem heavily weighed down by the very existence of a judicial system. Rather than acting as the stable leader of a free country that he’s supposed to be as the president of the United States, he has breakdown after breakdown when confronted with the fact that wrongdoers in the United States can’t exactly count on escaping accountability for their actions.
He had one such breakdown on Twitter this Sunday after The New York Times reported that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had been looking into an August 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr., George Nader, and others. During that meeting, Nader reportedly offered campaign help for the Trumps from the crown princes of both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Just as in the case of a meeting with a Russian lawyer earlier in the year, Trump Jr. didn’t go out of his way to shoot down the illegal idea.
The elder Trump seems far more concerned with the existence of a probe into this meeting than you’d think he would be if nothing illegal or even just questionable had transpired. It’s a trait that he’s exhibited in the context of other lines of inquiry as well.
This time around, on Sunday afternoon, Trump wrote on Twitter as follows:
‘The Witch Hunt finds no Collusion with Russia – so now they’re looking at the rest of the World. Oh’ great!’
To begin with, it’s ironic for the president to whine about the investigation as he’s doing here when it’s the entire United States who faced the intrusion of a foreign power into their electoral system in 2016. It’s also people across the United States who continue to face other issues that the president should help protect them from, like the erosion of our nation’s health care system. Here, the president just seems to care about his public image, as could be said so many other times.
Digging into his position of staunch, belligerent opposition to the nation’s justice system even further, the president followed up the above message with a demand for yet another new Republican line of inquiry into that justice system.
He wrote:
‘I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes – and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!’
As the tweet above indicates, one of the other recent sparks for the president’s anger is the reported interaction of an FBI informant with members of his team.
He has turned that and other aspects to the investigation into Russian election interference into alleged political attacks on his team, but they’re not. While he sits around whining that the world isn’t going his way, other threats are still progressing inside the United States and around the world, but the president is just on Twitter.
His Sunday afternoon ranting comes after having earlier in the day bemoaned the report from The New York Times about the aforementioned Trump Jr. meeting as “long & boring” — because that’s the kind of thing that U.S. presidents do now, apparently.
