A recent press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office for Washington, D.C., announces the charging of four new defendants accused of participation in the pro-Trump violence at the U.S. Capitol of January 6, 2021.

The defendants include two apparent father-son duos: Scott Slater Sr. and Scott Alex Slater Jr. alongside Tighe John Scott and Jarret Carl Scott. All four of the individuals are facing felony criminal allegations as part of the newly unveiled case, which accuses them of comparatively late-stage involvement in the hours-long assault on the Capitol complex. A federal timeline picks up nearly two hours after the Capitol building itself was first breached, though authorities also say the defendants attended the high-profile, pro-Trump rally held elsewhere in the nation’s capital that same day.

Among other specifics, authorities accuse Slater Jr. of hurling multiple objects at police, including a flagpole and a sign announcing “area closed.” As the crowd’s confrontation with officers went on, authorities say that two of the defendants from this group had golf clubs.

It “is alleged that Tighe Scott engaged with police, physically struck riot shields, and attempted to rip a riot shield out of an officer’s hands,” said the government’s recounting of that stage of events. “It is also alleged that Slater Sr., holding a golf club, physically pushed and resisted against police shields. It is alleged that Jarrett Scott, also holding a golf club, physically pushed and resisted against police shields as well.” The time given for this series of allegations is about two and a half hours after the Capitol building’s initial breach.

As could be expected, the alleged usage of weapons against police upped the seriousness of some of these defendants’ criminal allegations. Slater Jr.’s charges include assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon, which comes with up to 20 years in prison if eventually found guilty. Both Scotts are also accused of assaulting police that day. The older of the two — meaning Tighe Scott — is a former driver in NASCAR, the racing league.
