Former President Donald Trump met Thursday with elected Republicans, reportedly trashing Milwaukee — the Wisconsin city where Republicans are gearing up to hold their party convention proceedings where the GOP is set to formally give Trump their presidential nomination for the year.

“Milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city,” Trump said, according to established journalist Jake Sherman.

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.), who represents apparently most of the city of Milwaukee, took notice, referencing Trump’s ongoing criminal proceedings in New York City and suggesting that the ex-president will be out on parole when the Republican Party’s nominating convention actually takes place. Trump’s sentencing in that criminal case is set for just before the convention.

Though the ex-president was convicted on all counts in the felony case following accusations of falsifying business records, it’s unclear whether he’ll get any time in detention. Precedent and relevant law appear to suggest it could go either way.

“Once he’s settled in with his parole officer, I am certain he will discover that Milwaukee is a wonderful, vibrant and welcoming city full of diverse neighborhoods and a thriving business community,” said a post from Moore’s official account that quickly garnered a lot of attention on its platform (X, the site formerly called Twitter).

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) also knocked Trump. “Milwaukee makes the greatest beer, brats, and motorcycles in the world. It’s home to some of our most vibrant communities, hardest workers, and is a part of what makes Wisconsin the best state in the nation. Donald Trump wouldn’t understand even if a jury told him so,” said a post also on X.

Though some on the Right were contesting the reporting of Trump’s comments, the ex-president has been quite public at times with deriding major American cities.
