It is impossible to predict on any given day what Trump might do or say about any issue facing the American people. It is one of the most problematic aspects of the Trump presidency; his unpredictability and wavering on every issue before making statements that are sure to cause more problems than he solves.
Of course, every move Trump makes is suspect and colored by the mounting evidence – secret back channels, illegal data mining, communications between Trump adviser Roger Stone and Wikileaks’ Julian Assange – that the 2016 presidential elections may not have been decided by the democratic process voters trust. Instead, numerous examples of shady moves that were used to install Trump into the White House and the GOP’s unwillingness to investigate the truth behind their victory have eroded any hope of bipartisanship or a quelling of suspicions against the president and his political party.
Nowhere is this more clear than the ending of the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government operatives. An incomplete report will soon be released to the public despite the failure to interview many of the key players involved or investigate areas that should raise suspicions. It is clear from the multiple tweets Trump has posted that this report is designed to clear him and says exactly what he wants it to say: he did nothing wrong, everything is Obama’s fault, the “deep state” actors in the intelligence community are out to get him, and the entire investigation is a “witch hunt.”
As this bad version of a Russian spy novel plays out, important matters related to the presidency hang in the balance. Another government shutdown looms as Trump toys with the idea of vetoing the spending bill he just bragged about on Twitter the day before. Young immigrants whose very survival depends on the stability of the president’s decisions and his empathy remains on shaky ground. No one is able to lay out the president’s thinking on any of these issues since they change from day to day, leaving the American people uncertain and the government with an appearance of wild instability.
