Easter is not going to stop the president from bringing out his harshest anti-immigrant talking points. Continuing on with the ranting that has defined his past few days, the president took to Twitter on Monday night to again rail against immigrants and the countries that they come from.
He has carried on essentially ever since assuming a position on the national stage with the idea that nations in Central and South America — most prominently Mexico — are “sending” the worst parts of their societies to the United States. Using this false idea as a backbone, the president has long pushed the claim that not only is he going to put up a wall in between us and Mexico, but in addition, he’s going to get the Mexicans to pay for it. After all, in his world, they bear some responsibility for the supposedly massive, insurmountable problem that is undocumented immigration to the United States.
He rehashed this rhetoric on Twitter Monday night, beginning by writing:
‘As ridiculous as it sounds, the laws of our country do not easily allow us to send those crossing our Southern Border back where they came from. A whole big wasted procedure must take place. Mexico & Canada have tough immigration laws, whereas ours are an Obama joke. ACT CONGRESS.’
Remember, this is the same guy who whined about the supposed lack of due process after it came out that his staff secretary had credible allegations against him of domestic abuse. His comments at the time also seemed aimed at the “#MeToo” movement, which has brought down an array of powerful sexual abusers through the empowerment of victims to tell their stories.
When it comes to credibly alleged abusers, then, the president wants to make sure that the principles of “due process” are followed, but judging off his latest round of statements, he’s not interested in the same principles being applied to the situations of people who just want a better life and have posed no harm to anyone.
It was after the above tweet that he added his latest rehashing of the claim that foreign countries are “sending” dangerous people to our border.
The president’s latest days of rage-tweeting come concurrent to a recent report from Fox & Friends about a group of migrants making their way through Mexico to the border of the United States, where many of them were reported to plan to seek asylum.
As mentioned, the president’s Monday night statements are hardly the first that he’s lobbed at immigrants as a whole and Mexico in particular in recent days.
For instance, early on Easter Sunday itself, the president wrote:
‘Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S… NEED WALL!’
Through his insistence on the supposed necessity for a border wall, the president has kept domestic negotiations about immigration policy in a stalemate, and it’s weighed on our relationship with our southern neighbor as well.
One of the consequences of this stalemate is that the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program, remains in legal limbo at this point. The Trump administration moved last year to end it, but they’ve been stymied in their efforts.
On Twitter Monday night, the president added a couple of other messages, one about his supposedly high approval rating and another about supposed Democratic obstructionism.
