So far in 2018, there has been an average of one school shooting per week in the United States. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida have spoken out and organized a march in Washington to call for tougher common sense gun law reform and Oliver North, the new president of the NRA who was once convicted of illegally giving weapons to rebels in Nicaragua during the Iran-Contra scandal, has referred to those teenage activists and those who agree with the students as “terrorists.”

On the website for the Santa Fe Independent School District, administrators issued a statement following the initial reports:
‘This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The district has initiated a lockdown. We will send out additional information as soon as it is available.’
Breaking: There has reportedly been a shooting at Santa Fe High School near Houston this morning. Witnesses are telling local media a gunman entered and started firing.

It has been confirmed that shots were fired, but there are no reports yet as to the extent of the injuries or fatalities. A witness who spoke to CNN reported that one female student was shot, and updates continue to come as reports come in.

What is known at this time is that police have responded to the scene and that the shooting began in the early morning hours and students have told reporters that the shooter entered an art class and began firing.

The school remains in lockdown status as of 8:48 am EST.
‘One student told KTRK she was in first period when the fire alarms went off. Students were told to evacuate and staff members instructed them to run across the street and hide.
‘Police cars were seen swarming the scene and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents were responding.’

UPDATE: The shooter is currently in custody and two victims have been confirmed as of 9:47 am EST.
