Since before his presidency even began, Trump made a habit of threatening women who dare to stand up to him. During a debate with Hillary Clinton, he threatened to imprison her if he won the election. When women began coming forward with stories of sexual harassment and sexual assault, Trump threatened to sue them all. His bullying of women with derisive names like “Pocahontas” and “Crazy Mika” is well-known.
Now, Trump is making another threat, this time against Maxine Waters.
Of course, Waters did not call for “harm” against those who represent Trump and defend his policies of human rights abuses. She called for them to be confronted no matter where they are. Because the White House is setting the terms for how and when they will answer questions from voters and those answers so often are lies, demanding answers when they haven’t had time to construct responses and coordinate which lies they’ll tell is one of the only chances Americans have to get to the truth.
Americans should be outraged by Trump’s outrageous threat, but the White House will most likely downplay it and feign confusion over why anyone saw it as anything other than the president “hitting back” in a justifiable way.
While not everyone on the left agrees that this form of confrontation is appropriate, it’s very difficult to feel sympathy for those who are unable to eat at nice restaurants over the children separated from their parents and forced into detention camps.
