U.S. President Donald Trump refuses to allow the Russia investigation to proceed unimpeded, although he claims to have done nothing wrong. On Sunday, he again launched attacks on Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team, seeking to twist his Twitter rhetoric into an undercut to the probe.
He wrote, in part:
‘Is Robert Mueller ever going to release his conflicts of interest with respect to President Trump, including the fact that we had a very nasty & contentious business relationship, I turned him down to head the FBI (one day before appointment as S.C.) & Comey is his close friend’
Despite Trump’s claims to the contrary, Mueller’s background has actually been cleared by the Justice Department itself. All the way back in 2017, top DOJ ethics official Cynthia Shaw explicitly asserted there to be no apparent conflicts of interest on Mueller’s part or that of at least seven of his investigators.
To top it off, Mueller counters Trump’s claim that the two of them ever had any contentious business relationship at all. Trump is seemingly referencing a past claim of his that the past FBI director and current leader of the Russia investigation abandoned his membership at Trump National Golf Club in Virginia over a fees dispute. Last year, Mueller spokesperson Joshua Stueve asserted:
‘Mr. Mueller left the club in October 2011 without dispute.’
So there you have it — Trump is again launching completely reality disconnected attacks on the Russia investigation in order to… clear his name? That’s what he claims to be doing, but it’s backfiring, and has been backfiring for months. At present, the attacks could be continuing on the strength of Trump’s fear of what information his former personal attorney Michael Cohen could share with authorities, including Mueller.
Twitter users are among those fed up.
