Donald Trump, Jr. loves to cite conservative and other right-wing opinion pieces as proof of his father’s great success, but one of his more ridiculous claims, that Latino voters are moving toward Donald Trump thanks to his massive economic successes, has got to be one of the most ridiculous.
Utterly ignoring the fact that Trump’s current approval rating among Latino voters, Junior gleefully touted a lower midterm election turnout into some kind of statement about his father’s economic policies.
In the Wall Street Journal opinion piece that Junior retweeted, USC professor Roberto Suro is quoted as saying:
‘Recent surveys that show that most Latino voters hold negative views toward Trump, but by a much smaller margin than Democrats overall. Indeed, Latino views in this survey are closer to those of independents which, of course, defies the notion that Latinos are a steadfast Democratic constituency and the presumption that Trump’s immigration policies have alienated large numbers of Latinos.’
The article goes on to cite polls in districts in California (where Trump’s approval rating has dropped 20 percent since his election), Texas (where his approval ratings have dropped 15 percent), and Florida (where it has dropped 21 percent), where GOP candidates in districts where Trump lost in 2016 are doing better in polls than expected.
This is not due to Trump’s economic policies and translates not one bit to added approval for Trump. He is not “creating new Republicans,” as the WSJ suggests. Trump’s overall approval rating from Latino voters is 19 percent. Obama’s was 70 percent.
