Trump’s numerous vacillations on the omnibus spending bill have kept America guessing, caused the stock market to plunge due to the uncertainty around a government shutdown, and has appeared to be greatly influenced by extreme right-wing pundits like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.
Now, he’s also changed his mind on who should be held responsible for that shutdown.
Just one week ago, Trump argued with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about the dire need for five billion dollars to fund his border wall, insisting that he would sign no spending bill that didn’t include those funds. Both told Trump that if a government shutdown ensued because of his refusal, he would own it.
Trump said that he would be proud to own that shutdown and that he would “take the mantle” for it.
Later, he appeared to back off his refusal. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that the funding could come from somewhere else, such as military spending, and that the funds may not be needed in the spending bill to keep Trump’s promise to “build the wall.” Of course, that promise also included Mexico paying for the wall, but no one in the GOP wants to acknowledge that now.
Now, Trump insists that the Democrats will own the inevitable shutdown as the spending bill is sent to the Senate, where he does not have the votes to get it passed. This is just another lie from the liar-in-chief who sits in the Oval Office.
