This week, for the first time, Robert Mueller testified before Congress about the Russia investigation that he led as special counsel. He drove home and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) eventually re-upped on Twitter a number of key points centering on the fact that despite the absence of any criminal charges for President Donald Trump, Mueller’s probe uncovered the facts about issues ranging from Russian government efforts to prop up the Trump campaign to the president’s team accepting that help to Trump eventually obstructing the probe to understand the problem. These issues led Mueller to admit this week that Trump could easily still be held criminally liable for his behavior once he leaves office.

Schiff shared:

‘Mueller’s report tells the story of Russia’s sweeping and systematic attack on our democracy. It’s the story of a Trump Campaign which embraced foreign help, made use of it, and covered it up. Above all, it is a story of disloyalty to country, greed, and lies.’

Even if Mueller didn’t charge Trump with a crime, this is still a big issue! Trump and his supporters consistently ignore these facts that Mueller has laid out in his testimony before Congress and in the final report from his investigation. There is clearly available evidence of Russian efforts to prop up the Trump campaign — they stole emails from key Democrats, distributed them through key channels like WikiLeaks and DCLeaks, and ran a misinformation campaign on the web to accompany that. They tried to connect with the Trump camp numerous times, and sometimes — like during Donald Trump Jr.’s repeated run-ins with Kremlin-associated individuals — they were at least somewhat successful. These facts should not be debatable according to any reasonable understanding of basic reality!

Republicans have still found plenty to complain about on the occasion of Mueller’s testimony to Congress anyway. For instance, Texas Congressman John Ratcliffe railed at the former FBI director about him supposedly having stepped out of line in addressing Trump’s innocence via asserting he was not exonerated, since supposedly, Mueller was only supposed to address whether there was a prosecutable crime. As the special counsel tried to get out right then and there and is apparent from the available evidence, however — this is a unique case of a president skirting the law while in office while generally protected from criminal indictment. It’s not over.
