Donald Trump really needs a scapegoat following the criticism he received after a mass shooter entered a Wal-Mart in El Paso, Texas and killed 20 people after writing a manifesto using Trump’s own words about migrants. So far, he’s blamed video games, mental illness, and now he’s moved on to Hollywood.
‘Hollywood, I don’t call them the elites, I think the elites are people they go after in many cases but Hollywood is really terrible…You talk about racist, Hollywood is racist. What they’re doing with the kind of movies they’re putting out is actually very dangerous for our country. What Hollywood is doing is a tremendous disservice to our country.’
Later, he ranted on Twitter about the same topic, referring to a movie that has not yet been released called The Hunt, in which rich liberals hunt white characters from red states that they refer to as “deplorables.” Trump and the rest of the GOP have pointed to the movie, whose makers have stalled the release following the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, as inciting violence against Trump supporters.
The movie is an old story that’s been remade several times but updated to reflect modern political divides in the U.S. Far from showing the wealthy elites as the heroes, the movie paints them as evil and Trump supporters as victims just as Trump would want.
Entertainment Weekly‘s review of the film, however, was quite different.
‘If anything, judging by the trailer, the Blumhouse film seems to be attempting to illustrate the widening economic divide between the haves and have-nots and villainizing the 1 percent — with its red-state characters as the movie’s victims and heroes.’
Trump wasn’t bothered by Hollywood’s racism or their perceived mistreatment of conservatives for the many years he wanted to be part of that crowd. A look at his celebrity wedding guest list, or the contestants on his Celebrity Apprentice game show indicates that Trump has wanted to be part of the Hollywood crowd for years. The individual people in Hollywood who have political opinions are allowed to do so, and Trump sure likes to trot out the celebrities who support him, like Jon Voight, Kanye West, Roseanne Barr, and Scott Baio, at every opportunity.
