President Donald Trump and his cronies continue to work desperately to try and block Congressional oversight of the president’s activities. To that end, the Trump team abruptly blocked E.U. Ambassador Gordon Sondland from testifying to Congress as he’d been scheduled to do this Tuesday covering what he knows about Trump’s attempt to get Ukraine to dig up dirt on the Bidens. Trump defended demanding that Sondland not testify in a Twitter message in which he wrote that Congressional Democrats had set up nothing but a “kangaroo court” and in the process, “taken away” the “rights” of Republicans. This complaint is rich coming from the guy whose favorite pastime is blasting his political opponents in angry rhetoric delivered to jeering mobs.
He tweeted:
‘I would love to send Ambassador Sondland, a really good man and great American, to testify, but unfortunately he would be testifying before a totally compromised kangaroo court, where Republican’s rights have been taken away, and true facts are not allowed out for the public to see. Importantly, Ambassador Sondland’s tweet, which few report, stated, “I believe you are incorrect about President Trump’s intentions. The President has been crystal clear: no quid pro quo’s of any kind.” That says it ALL!’
Sondland did not tweet that. The text is a quote from a text message that he sent top U.S. diplomat in Kiev Bill Taylor, who had expressed concern about the appearance of withholding military aid to Ukraine to use as leverage in a push to get the country to dig up dirt on the Bidens.
It’s also quite a stretch at best to say that the message in question has been underrepresented in media reporting — it’s progressed to the point of even being featured in a sketch on Saturday Night Live about Vice President Mike Pence’s take on the impeachment inquiry that has been launched against Trump. Many have raised concern about the part of the message that comes right after what Trump quoted, where Sondland admonishes Taylor to continue their conversation over the phone — which isn’t exactly something someone who has nothing to hide says.
