Last week, President Donald Trump was impeached on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of justice, and no matter the next steps for the case, he’ll forever have that condemnation on his record. This weekend, while on a holiday vacation in Florida, he rushed to Twitter to share a jumbled screed with the nation about the impeachment trial that’s set to follow his formal charging by the House. He spouted off with a conspiracy theory that “Crazy Nancy” is trying to “take over” the Senate and faces certain electoral defeat in 2020 — but none of that actually corresponds to reality.
‘Nancy Pelosi, who has already lost the House & Speakership once, & is about to lose it again, is doing everything she can to delay the zero Republican vote Articles of Impeachment. She is trying to take over the Senate, & Cryin’ Chuck is trying to take over the trial. No way! What right does Crazy Nancy have to hold up this Senate trial. None! She has a bad case and would rather not have a negative decision. This Witch Hunt must end NOW with a trial in the Senate, or let her default & lose. No more time should be wasted on this Impeachment Scam!’

Remember, he’s spent all or part of the day at a property branded with his own name for just under 30 percent of his time in office up to this point — and yet, he’d like us to take his concerns about “wasting time” seriously. Besides his publicly viewable lax approach to the presidency, it wasn’t that long ago that schedules of his leaked showing a majority of his working days taken up by unstructured “executive time” — and anyone who’s viewed his Twitter feed likely has a good idea of how he spends the majority of that.
He claims that the Democratic push for basic fairness at his trial in the Senate constitutes some kind of takeover effort, but that’s just not true. It’s the House’s job to present their case — what are they supposed to do, just barge in blind to whatever crock trial that Senate Republicans concoct, no matter what effect it has on their actual case presentation? Democrats have made straightforward demands for testimony from witnesses who they’ve been after for some time — it’s Trump and his allies who are monumentally freaking out and remain down in the majority of polls heading into 2020.
