Stacey Abrams lifted up her state of Georgia, ripped off its red cloak, and redressed it in a glorious shade of blue. This has been a years-long effort, and finally, she is being rewarded with one of the world’s top honors.

Without Stacey Abrams and her nonprofit Fair Fight Action, President Joe Biden might not have won the election in Georgia. She ran for governor of her state, but her opponent, Brian Kemp, managed to finagle his way on top.

It might have had something to do with him being in charge of the election as Georgia’s secretary of state. This powerful woman never conceded, though.

Kemp managed to implement the nation’s largest voter purge in history. And, of course, this action affected Black voters disproportionally.

On Monday, Socialist Party politician in Norway’s Parliament, Lars Haltbrekken, compared Abrams work to that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, Reuters reports:

‘Abrams’ work follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights. Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society.’

President Barack Obama was the last U.S. winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. Thousands of individuals can nominate someone for this honor. The results will be announced in October 2021.

The Oslo-based Norwegian Nobel Committee will put out their shortlist for the award in March 2021. This year, Abrams will be going up against Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, according to CNBC.

The Georgia politician began her work to fight voter suppression in 2014. That was when she started the New Georgia Project. Its goal was to get unregistered Black Georgians registered and for them to vote in the midterms that year.

After Kemp claimed he won the governorship in 2018, Abrams continued fighting against voter suppression in her state through her Fair Fight Action. She took the issue of voter suppression from a state issue to a national problem.

Avengers star Mark Ruffalo, Cher, and legislators alike complimented Abrams after President Joe Biden took the state. This even as Donald Trump had sharpened teeth was ready to consume the state by any means. The peach state also handed the Democrats two Democratic senators in the runoff elections

As President Biden filled his positions with loyal supporters, it came as something of a surprise when he did not give her a plum assignment. However, she may be getting ready to run for governor again. If she wins, she will be the first Black woman to take that win.

The following Americans and American institutions have also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize:

‘The Black Lives Matter movement, leaker of the Pentagon Papers regarding the Vietnam War Daniel Ellsberg, America’s Congresswoman Barbara Lee, and WikiLeaks.’

In addition, pro-democracy and civil rights campaigners across Eastern Europe have also been nominated.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee determines the win. They never comment on the nominations, but those who nominated people can reveal their nomination if they so choose.
