In a truly delusional Tuesday Twitter rant, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) blamed Trump opponents for the January 6 rioting at the Capitol in an apparent attempt to absolve ex-President Trump of blame for the attack. Rioters assembled at the Capitol as Congress worked on the certification of Joe Biden’s electoral college victory and held brazenly pro-Trump memorabilia as they swarmed the building — but Greene apparently refuses to acknowledge the nature of this basic reality. Rioters singled out Democrats for harassment — one man, who has since been arrested, was photographed at a desk in the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and another rioter who has also been arrested said that they wanted to shoot Pelosi “in the friggin’ brain.”
There is no legitimate evidence for the idea that Trump opponents were behind the rioting. The Justice Department has charged three individuals associated with the terrorist organization known as the Oath Keepers with conspiracy, obstructing an official proceeding, and other crimes — and in one post that the Justice Department documented, one of those charged said to “Let them try to certify some crud on capitol hill with a million or more patriots in the streets.” These remarks are in reference to the certification of Biden’s victory that was scheduled for January 6, and Donald Trump himself openly pushed the idea for his supporters to protest on that day.
Greene commented as follows:
‘If the #Jan6 organizers were Trump supporters, then why did they attack us while we were objecting to electoral college votes for Joe Biden? The attack RUINED our objection that we spent weeks preparing for, which devastated our efforts on behalf of Trump and his voters. They placed pipe bombs at the RNC and the DNC the night before. They did NOT just target one party. They targeted Republicans and Democrats. They were against the government ALL together. I was in the Chamber when the attack occurred. I was very upset, scared, and terrified for ALL of us – every person from Capitol staff, press, police to every Member R and D. I even made a video telling people to stop and they should protest peacefully.’
Greene’s claim that the riot “ruined” a planned Republican objection to the certification of some of Biden’s electoral votes is a lie. After the rioting, a full 147 Republican members of Congress still voted against the certification of Biden victories! As for the targeting of Republicans, Trump repeatedly and publicly incited his followers against Republican leaders who he felt weren’t loyal enough to his cause. The rioters were Trump supporters.
Greene added as follows:
‘The Capitol attack was planned and organized, NOT incited in the moment by President Trump, and NO Republican Member was involved. We were ALL victims that day. And once again, Trump is the victim of the never ending hate fueled witch hunt. This impeachment trial a circus for the Democrat media mob to entertain the masses that they have brainwashed and addicted to hate, so they don’t see the Dem policies being rapidly forced into place that are destroying our lives, stealing our freedoms, and putting America last.’
Donald Trump is not the victim here! Before finishing her wild rant, Greene included some dehumanization of Democratic voters, who she claimed were “brainwashed and addicted to hate.”
