Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) continued her criticism of former President Donald Trump and his election lies saying on ABC’s This Week that it’s her “responsibility” to “tell the truth.” Cheney was recently voted out of a position in Republican Party leadership after her continued refusal to go along with Trump’s election falsehoods, but she has not indicated any interest in suddenly jumping onboard with the delusions just because of opposition from fellow Republicans. Cheney has previously said that she intends to work to keep Trump from ever regaining the presidency if he decides to run again.
Trump, of course, has repeatedly and consistently claimed without any legitimate supporting evidence that the 2020 presidential election was somehow rigged for Joe Biden. This idea is based on lies about the basic facts of what has happened and is happening in election systems across the country. On ABC, Cheney commented as follows:
‘I think that it is very important to stand up for what’s right. I know that there are many members [of Congress] who have expressed concern about their own security, and I think that’s an important point to think about as well — that we now live in a country where members’ votes are affected because they’re worried about their security. They’re worried about threats on their lives… But look, there’s no question that at this moment the majority of the Republican Party is not where I am, but it’s my responsibility as an elected official, it’s my responsibility as a leader to lead and to tell the truth.’

On a similar note, Cheney indicated during an interview that aired this weekend on Fox News Sunday that she believes that the Republican Party can not be victorious while propagating Trump’s election lies. Many Republicans, even if not actively promoting Trump’s election lies, have allowed them to have space to flourish.

Cheney elaborated more specifically while on ABC that she believes that the GOP has to “stop incentivizing unserious behavior among our elected officials,” adding that the party also has to “stop incentivizing vitriol” and “stop incentivizing people to show up here and think the goal is to be a social media star.” Cheney’s comments, of course, seem like a clear dig at former President Trump’s infamous obsession with social media. While in office, Trump often seemed to prioritize posting on social media above handling more lasting issues that were unfolding.
