Trump supporters Alexander and Caitlin Everett have now been fired from their jobs as officers with the Seattle Police Department following an investigation that outlined how the two milled around outside of the U.S. Capitol building as rioters swarmed the premises in January. Alexander and Caitlin — who are husband and wife — did not enter the building, but interim Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz explained in a statement that, based on the evidence, it’s “beyond absurd to suggest that they did not know they were in an area where they should not be, amidst what was already a violent, criminal riot.”

Diaz also said as follows:

‘The two officers were found to have crossed the outdoor barriers established by the Capitol Police and were directly next to the Capitol Building. Clear evidence places them directly next to the Capitol Building… These two officers were present at an attack on the U.S. Capitol, which was also an attack on our profession and on every officer across the country… The participation of these two officers in that crowd is a stain on our department, and on the men and women who work every day to protect our community, serve those in need, and do so with compassion and dignity. ’

The Everetts do not appear to have faced any criminal charges at this point. Prosecutors have seemed to largely focus on those who actually went inside of the building, although charges have not been doled out only in such cases. Overall, well over 530 Trump supporters have been criminally charged for their part in the Capitol riot, and most of these cases remain ongoing, although some have already culminated in plea agreements. This week, Trump supporter Scott Fairlamb pleaded guilty to a pair of felony counts — including obstruction of an official proceeding and assaulting, resisting, or impeding a law enforcement officer — and although federal prosecutors do not appear to have filed their own sentencing recommendation yet (it’s due on September 20), he is facing up to a little over 4 years in jail.
