What is not to like? The new bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill will take the internet across the nation much as President Dwight Eisenhower did with the first interstate system. For decades the Republicans in Washington have let their house fall into disrepair as they sat in their vaults counting their gold. We can see how our bridges and our railroads have fallen into rack and ruin. And who has not hit a derelict pothole? So this is how it goes.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi went after errant conservative Democrats and walked out with 100 percent of the Dems voting for the new bill. It has $550 billion in new funding to not only repair but replace transportation. This is truly a magnificent piece of work that will benefit nearly every American.
In the Senate, all 50 Democrats plus a surprising 19 Republicans voted to support the legislation, too. Pelosi will take up the bill no later than September 27. She has warned the Senate that it will go through in tandem with President Joe Biden’s other signature bill, a $3.5 trillion human infrastructure bill, a larger budget reconciliation spending plan
The USA Today-Suffolk University poll reported results included an optimistic 63 percent of the participants supporting the first $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, which passed with a bipartisan vote. Approximately, 63 percent of Americans supported this bipartisan infrastructure bill.
Thus far, the larger infrastructure got nearly all of the Democrats’ votes and none of the Republicans, which was a clear message that the GOP is not in touch with their voters. The USA TODAY reported:
‘It was supported by 9 of 10 Democrats, 1 in 5 Republicans and close to half of independents.’
The larger infrastructure bill leaned directly into the Democrats’ vision. Republicans’ priorities have tended to favor the very wealthy and major corporations. Americans did not come out as strongly for it in the polls, but it still received good marks with 52 percent, 90 percent of the Democratic interviewees, and almost half of the Independents supporting it. Only 20 percent of Republicans supported it.
They are aware of the cost but recognize how badly Americans need better jobs, higher wages, a better transportation system, and human care more in tune with other countries. China’s transportation puts us to shame as do our allies’ human infrastructure.
The USA Today-Suffolk University poll interviewed 1,000 registered voters. It was conducted with both landlines and cellphones from Thursday to Tuesday. The margin or error was +/- 3.1 percentage points.
USA TODAY reported that the public will sway their legislators:
‘That positive sentiment among voters should make it easier to gain the backing of members of Congress, despite the narrow Democratic majority in the House and the 50-50 divide in the Senate. It also could create complications for some Republicans, especially those who vote against both of them, with some constituents.’
