Trump Attacks Backfire As Liz Cheney’s Fundraising Totals Skyrocket

Since the January 6 attempted coup, a number of heroes have emerged. We know the Capitol Police literally saved our democracy and suffered for it. Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) is also one of those heroes. She has been looking toward what is next. And that something might be big, very big.

With a steely spine, she called out the former president on his Big Lie. In spite of the danger to herself, she agreed not only to sit on the January 6 Select Committee but to be its vice-chair. After her three terms in the House, she said, according to CNN:

‘[She would do] whatever it takes to prevent Trump from becoming president again. And she has not closed the door on running for the White House herself.’

The Wyoming representative has been a real money-making powerhouse. President George W. Bush and traditional Republicans have been holding fundraisers for her. Having former Vice President Dick Cheney as her father did not hurt either.

She brought in an outstanding amount given that Wyoming was not a very populous state. In her first quarter of 2021, she raised over $1.5 million, CNN reported. In the second quarter, that number jumped to $1.9 million.

Then, there was her political schedule, a dead giveaway that she had been seriously considering a presidential run in 2024. She will head out to New Hampshire on November 9. There she will speak at the St. Anselm College’s Institute of Politics.

Publisher of the conservative Manchester newspaper, The New Hampshire Union Leader and Loeb School of Communications President, Joe McQuaid will sponsor the event.  McQuaid has traditionally been the pathway Republican presidential candidates must take.

Former ambassador, Pentagon official, and adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney, Eric Edelman said:

‘I’ve never had a conversation with her about 2024. If there was going to be a Never Trump candidate, I can’t think of anyone better.’

In a CBS 60 Minutes interview Sunday, she said:

‘Those who think that by ignoring Trump, he will go away, have been proven wrong.’

In spite of Trump’s repeated attacks on Cheney, she has continued to call him out. She also repeats her complaints about the ex-president, calling his January 6 actions “unforgivable.”

In addition, she went after her fellow Republicans. She condemned Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for throwing himself at the feet of the former president:

‘What he’s done is embrace Donald Trump. And if I were doing what he’s doing, I would be deeply ashamed of myself.’

The ex-president endorsed her Wyoming opponent in a statement that read:

‘I strongly endorse Republican House of Representatives Candidate Harriet Hageman from Wyoming who is running against warmonger and disloyal Republican, Liz Cheney.’

Former Republican congressman and CNN contributor Charlie Dent noted:

“For her, this clearly is not about politics and the next election. She’s clearly focused on a post-Trump future for the party.’

She spoke to The Washington Post about what she has been doing:

‘The argument that, that you often hear is that if you do something that is perceived as against Trump that, you know, you’ll put yourself in political peril. And that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy because if Republican leaders don’t stand up and condemn what happened then, the voices in the party that are so dangerous will only get louder and stronger.’

Cheney continued, speaking about McCarthy:

‘What he’s done is embrace Donald Trump. And if I were doing what he’s doing, I would be deeply ashamed of myself. I don’t know how you explain that to your children.

‘When you are in a situation where you have somebody who did what Donald Trump did, it is absolutely clear he cannot continue to be somebody you embrace. There’s a difference between somebody who voted for Donald Trump and being the Republican leader after an insurrection, and setting all of that aside and going to Mar-a-Lago, and rehabilitating him, bringing him back in. That, to me, is unforgivable.’
