Back when the twice-impeached ex-president who never won a popular vote in any election, Donald Trump, was in office, subpoenas weren’t worth the paper they were written on. If anyone had told Richard Nixon that people could just ignore subpoenas from the federal government, Watergate would most likely have never been prosecuted. But Trump wasn’t president during Watergate, and he’s not president now, either.

The select committee investigating the insurrection that took place on January 6, 2021, the one that the ex-president provoked with his endless lies about how he didn’t really lose the 2020 election – apparently Democrats, Republicans, election officials, companies who make vote tabulating machines, and a long-dead president of Cuba had conspired against him – issued three new subpoenas on Thursday, targeting some of the organizers of the event that led to violence and destruction.

According to a press release from the investigative committee:

‘Nathan Martin’s phone number and email address were listed among the contact information for “One Nation Under God.” A vendor who was also listed on the permit application informed Capitol Police that he was reporting to Ali Alexander and Mr. Martin and identified them both as being affiliated with Stop the Steal. On two of its websites, Stop the Steal advertised the Capitol rally event and sought donations to offset expenses for January 6th.’

Chairman Bennie G. Thompson made sure to include in a statement issued by the committee that ignoring these subpoenas will not be tolerated. No matter how long Trump and his attorney general, Bill Barr, allowed people to get away with ignoring elected lawmakers conducting criminal investigations, that doesn’t appear to be something the committee expects to tolerate.

‘The rally on the Capitol grounds on January 6th, like the rally near the White House that day, immediately preceded the violent attack on the seat of our democracy. Over the course of that day, demonstrations escalated to violence and protestors became rioters. The Select Committee needs to understand all the details about the events that came before the attack, including who was involved in planning and funding them. We expect these witnesses to cooperate fully with our probe.’

The committee says that records are expected to be produced by those subpoenaed by October 21 and Alexander and Martin are expected to testify before the committee on October 29th and 30th of 2021. However, most of their culpability is already well-known, especially since the two men made much of bragging about it on social media.

‘According to press reports, in the weeks before the January 6th attack, Mr. Alexander made repeated reference during Stop-the-Steal-sponsored events to the possible use of violence to achieve the organization’s goals and claimed to have been in communication with the White House and Members of Congress regarding events planned to coincide with the certification of the 2020 Electoral College results. Additionally, Mr. Alexander reportedly spoke at a rally on January 5th, 2021, held by the Eighty Percent Coalition at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., and led the crowd in a chant of “victory, or death.”’
