In the midst of war between Ukraine and Russia, the Ukrainians showed the world what patriotism looks like. Still, there are those who support Russia over America. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had a few choice words to say about that.
CBS News’ Face The Nation host Margaret Brennan told McConnell that Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) thought there was a “Putin wing of the Republican Party” which she believed included Marjorie Taylor Greene:
‘Congresswoman Liz Cheney has said there’s actually a Putin wing of the Republican Party. I think she’s referring to Congressman [Madison Cawthorn] who calls [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy] a thug. Marjorie Taylor Greene said that the U.S. should not fund a war the Ukrainians cannot possibly win.
‘Is there any room in the Republican Party for this rhetoric? And why isn’t there more discipline?’
The House Minority Leader McConnell responded, according to The Guardian:
‘Ah, well, there’s some lonely voices out there that are in a different place. But looking at Senate Republicans, I can tell you that I would have — if I had been the majority leader — would have put this Ukraine supplemental [funding bill] up by itself. I think virtually every one of my members would have voted for it.’
McConnell continued:
‘[T]he vast majority of the Republican Party writ large [are] totally behind the Ukrainians and urging the president to take these steps quicker [sic]. So there may be a few lonely voices off to the side. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to them.’
Congress approved giving $13.6 to Ukraine, half in military aid and half in humanitarian aid. In addition, we gave the democratic nation another two billion dollars “in military assistance.” But McConnell wanted to “give them more:”
‘This is a way to have to have a no-fly zone in effect, to have these weapons systems, ground-to-air weapons systems, give them a fighting chance to control the air, to shoot down planes and others that are seeking to control the air without the U.S. having a no-fly zone and our own pilots in there.’
Surprisingly enough, the Kentucky senator approved of how President Joe Biden has handled America’s place in the war. However, he thought the president should “step up his game:”
‘Ukrainians have killed more Russians in three weeks than we lost in Afghanistan and Iraq in 20 years. I think we ought to go into this believing the Ukrainians can actually win and the way they win is for us to get these defensive weapons systems to them as rapidly as possible.’
