Pelosi Taunts Trump During Inspiring Final Press Conference

As her stint as Speaker of the House winds down after she previously announced she would not seek a party leadership position among House Democrats in the new Congress, Nancy Pelosi derisively referred to Donald Trump as “what’s-his-name” in a discussion of her time leading Democrats and the House.

Asked Thursday at a press conference about any past and future conversations she may have with — and advice she might offer — incoming House GOP leadership, Pelosi indicated she wasn’t interested in trying to shepherd those who would serve after her, whether within the Democratic caucus in the chamber or in the House.

“What I have said to everybody is, the hardest thing that I had to do — since you’re asking this question: I was Speaker and Minority Leader under President Bush, under President Obama, under what’s-his-name, and just Speaker under President Biden,” Pelosi said on Thursday. “Three different presidents, two different roles. The hardest thing that I had to do… is when we had a Democratic president, and we were in the minority, as Minority Leader to sustain a presidential veto. Because the Republicans would roll out stuff that sounded like a chocolate sundae, but it was more like doggy doo. But it looked good, and it played well in districts.” Pelosi rallied Democrats against it. In her response, she also said she hoped for a swift resolution to the race for Speaker. Winning the role requires support from a majority in the House, but with several Republicans wavering on backing Kevin McCarthy, outcomes are unclear.

McCarthy recently made what seemed like another ploy for support in his bid for Speaker from figures on the far-right and publicly expressed backing for a letter from Republicans in the House pledging to oppose legislative priorities from Republican Senators who vote in favor of a bill funding the government up for consideration in the Senate this week as the end of existing funds looms. That legislative package also includes reforms to the process of Congressionally certifying the presidential election outcome making interference more difficult. Check out Pelosi’s comments below:
