Chuck Grassley Torpedoes His Own Investigation’s Basic Credibility On Fox News

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) have been running with the idea that there’s at least potentially something to a somewhat dated accusation against Joe Biden involving an exchange of financial support for some official move in office. There is an established history of perceptibly just baseless claims emerging about some kind of corruption involving Joe, but they’re fired up on this anyway.

“We aren’t interested in whether or not the accusations against Vice President Biden are accurate or not,” Grassley insisted, basically admitting that it’s not really about exposing the truth. “We’re responsible for making sure the FBI does its job, and that’s what we want to know.” It is politically convenient for Grassley and Comer — to say the least — to use their purported interest in somebody else doing their job to promote accusations of bribery implicating Joe without even confirming that there’s anything real to the claims at all.

While on Fox, Grassley added GOP investigators intended to make the official FBI document outlining the allegations public if the materials were provided by federal authorities. It seems like the document was made available for protected review, but the FBI has — apparently — resisted just outright providing it to the Republicans doing these probes.

“The public’s business ought to be public,” Grassley continued, discussing the scrutiny of these dubious claims as though it’s some kind of credibly concern-warranting issue. Grassley’s insistence that he’s just asking questions isn’t credible, since him carrying water for the accusations even in this manner does, in fact, inherently legitimize the claims. Giving airtime to anyone who accuses a public official like Biden of anything ludicrous isn’t rational — and it’s not really what they’re doing here, either. That’s not how it works. They’re picking and choosing.

They’re quite committed, as Comer has already threatened contempt of Congress proceedings against Wray if they don’t get the document. It’s not clear such proceedings would mean much, though. Democrats approved contempt findings against a slew of Trump allies in the last Congress who were never charged by the authorities responsible for actually making those subsequent decisions.
