During an interview on the MSNBC program Morning Joe, Chris Christie memorably mocked former President Donald Trump as ostensibly thinking of the possibility of a jail cell every night as he goes to sleep.
It’s not that much of a leap to assert as much, obviously. Just look at how desperate Trump always sounds on his personal profile on Truth Social, his knock-off social media platform. It gets at something broader, though, which is that the matters Trump is facing are serious and have substance. His dismissive contentions he’ll essentially sail to victory as long as justice is secured don’t reasonably reflect the actual truth. Nobody made him take those documents, his allegedly willful retention of which has driven the criminal case against him that was filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith. And the Presidential Records Act (a piece of federal law) doesn’t give him essentially unilateral control over the handling of White House files. It sets up the opposite, leaving custody to the National Archives.
“And I’m telling you, no matter what he says, no matter how he’s bragging and going on and on about him not being afraid, he goes to bed every night thinking about the sound of that jail cell door closing,” Christie said on MSNBC in comments earlier spotlighted by The Hill. Christie argued Trump might agree to a plea deal, though Donald has multiple other criminal cases either already out there or seemingly in the works. It’ll be a major occasion when the case against him emerges that covers attempts at meddling with the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, as is seemingly soon coming.
Christie, a Republican and former governor of New Jersey, is running in the Republican presidential primary ahead of 2024. He’s way down in the polls behind Trump, who generally has a majority’s support, passing the many other primary rivals who’ve for some reason joined the race despite very slim chances.
