During an interview this Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” with host Jonathan Karl, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) criticized the conspiracy theory-inclined reactions from Republicans to the appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss to serve as special counsel for the investigation into Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s infamous son.

Some Republicans had previously clamored for a special counsel in the case, even sometimes specifically calling for Weiss. Now, many prominent elected officials in the party have expressed outrage, while continuing to also push accusations of the justice system generally favoring Democrats like the Bidens. Those right-wing claims specifically contend that so-called deep state forces, in league with Republicans’ opponents, have conspired to “weaponize” the federal government. Alberto Gonzales, who served as U.S. Attorney General when George W. Bush was president, recently criticized Republican claims about supposedly political bias in the nation’s justice system, saying they were effectively challenging the rule of law.

Raskin both evinced the stated commitment from Democrats to the rule of law and questioned Republicans for turning on Weiss, who struck a now abandoned plea deal with Hunter Biden that some characteristically claimed was overly lax.

“From my perspective, it is the rule of law and the justice system working itself out the way that it does,” Raskin said on ABC of the most recent developments. “And obviously it’s bumpy, and this side or that side doesn’t necessarily prefer this course of events. But our job, I think, as political people is to allow the justice system to run its course.”

“This is why we have a justice system,” Raskin added, responding directly to critical comments from House Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) about the new appointment of a special counsel to handle Hunter Biden’s case. “Let’s just let them do their job.” No evidence has emerged that shows any financial kickback for the president from the ostensibly corrupt business dealings in which Hunter was involved.
