Appearing recently at The New Orleans Book Festival, former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming shared again her stance that former President Donald Trump should face trial on his federal criminal charges of attempted election interference before the presidential election later this year.

Trump, now with the convention delegate total necessary to actually secure Republicans’ already expected presidential nomination, is on his way to that election, as is incumbent President Joe Biden, who similarly secured the necessary level of convention support on the Democratic side. While Trump was already charged in four separate cases, trial on the election-related charges has been delayed amid appeals from Trump claiming he holds wide-ranging legal protections by mere virtue of once serving as president that supposedly should stop the case.

“Our justice system has to be able — it has to be able to work to hold him accountable, to have a trial on the January 6 evidence, before the next election,” Cheney said to applause from the crowd, as Accountable GOP highlighted online. “It’s fundamentally important. […] Donald Trump, he knows what people have said when they’ve testified in front of the grand jury. He has all of that information. He knows. He’s got all of the transcripts — all of the transcripts from the January 6 committee: he has them. […] He knows that the people who will testify against him in open court in that January 6 trial are those closest to him.”

Investigators including Cheney, who held such a role when still in Congress as vice chair of the House committee that investigated January 6, have characterized the then-president as rhetorically sitting on his hands for significant stretches of time while the actual Capitol attack unfolded, spurred by the election lies tracing to him that also fueled his allegedly criminal schemes targeting the 2020 election results. And prosecutors in Trump’s case on the attempted election interference allegations have already referenced the attack, characterizing his evident and alleged stance towards it as reasonably indicative of his general mindset and ambitions.
