In a new letter covered first by reporting from CNN, the federal government’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has refuted claims from House Republicans of improper intervention in investigative efforts related to… you guessed it… Hunter Biden.

Democrats say that Republicans have failed to even explain their source for the claim, but the GOP alleges that CIA personnel derailed a Department of Justice-involved investigation of the younger Biden specifically via thwarting a potential interview with Kevin Morris, a man connected to Hunter Biden. The CIA now says that’s just not true.

“Without confirming or denying the existence of any associations or communications, CIA did not prevent or seek to prevent IRS or DOJ from conducting any such interview. The allegation is false,” said the agency’s James A. Catella, per CNN. Republicans, meanwhile, stuck by the claim.

Hunter Biden, a son of the current president, has figured prominently in conspiracy theories from House Republicans of potentially serious corruption ensnaring the current commander-in-chief, dubious claims that they have advanced amid an impeachment inquiry targeting President Joe Biden that’s yet to really go anywhere.

There’s no indication of House Republicans gathering the votes, for instance, to actually approve an impeachment of the president in their legislative chamber, and even if that scenario did somehow unfold, the Democratic Party-controlled Senate would inevitably shut it down, leaving this hypothetical, far-off impeachment with what’s basically already set to be no real-world impact.

Morris, who’s been a lawyer for the younger Biden, said at one point that he’d produced some documents amid the criminal investigation targeting Hunter that’s the evident backdrop for the GOP’s complaints. Congressional investigators eventually heard from Hunter himself, who was consistent in asserting that his father — the president — wasn’t involved in his business activities.
